Artists at work

On Friday 29 and Saturday 30 June the Barraba Youth Centre will be a hive of activity with up to nine artists working on canvas, turning wood, making jewellery, painting silk and creating sculptured works. Their works will be for sale.
One of our Guest Artists this year, Peter McKnight, will be demonstrating his techniques. He won the Packers Prize and the People’s Choice last year. It will be interesting to see how he approaches his much talked about work. Janette HvIstendahl is always a favourite at Frost and the Barraba Claypan . It is always a pleasure to watch her colourful approach to still life and her delicate treatment of landscape. Janette will be painting an impressionistic-style oil landscape on a stretched canvas, using an “alla prima” method (working wet on wet). Liz Cox, searches the world for her collection of beads, crystals and precious stones which she uses to make her jewellery. Each piece is unique and is constructed with the artist’s eye. Arlene Delehunty is an artist with many talents. This time around she will be showing us the art of silver smithing and showing us a range of her silver jewellery. Terry Weir belongs to the Tamworth Regional Craft Centre Woodturners. They are a very talented and creative bunch, producing very unusual but utilitarian pieces. It will be interesting to watch Terry at work on his lathe. Manilla artist Liz Priestly, will be busy constructing her interesting sculptures. Manilla artist Marilynne Barnes will be silk painting for our enjoyment. It is always fascinating to watch colours move and swirl on silk. Irene Esteves, this years’ pottery Judge will be demonstrating hand building techniques on Friday morning. This will be a wonderful opportunity for the school children to see a potter at work and they will have a chance to handle some clay. At the same time you can visit Frost over Barraba Youth Exhibition, and enjoy the colourful collaborative artistic effort of the Barraba School community, which is always a delight.

Frost Fair

The Fair gets under way on Saturday 30 June just after nine o’clock when the frost has gone! This family event in the grounds of St. Laurence’s church has always been part of the Arts Festival. The Barraba Band sets an upbeat festive mood and there will be children’s items throughout the morning. The Kids' Korner with lots of fun activities , as well as the jumping castle, is always a popular place for the children. There will be the usual myriad of stalls... bric-a-brac, plants, books, clothing, handmade and of course great home cooking. You need to be early to claim one of the famous sponges. Food stalls are very popular too with a choice of morning tea soup and the late morning/lunchtime BBQ. A Vintage and Collectibles Stall will have some surprising finds for everyone.
The Saturday afternoon concert at 1.30pm will conclude the Frost Fair and will feature the Inverell Male Choir with their varied bill of loved melodies and humour. The Thomas Jones Organ will also feature at the concert.
